The Bruce A. Gibbard Memorial Lectureship Series

The Bruce A. Gibbard Lectureship in Psychiatry at the University of Vermont is an endowed lectureship established in 2003 to honor the memory and contributions of Dr. Bruce Gibbard who died September 4, 2002. Dr. Gibbard, a psychoanalyst and Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Vermont Department of Psychiatry, was recognized as a superb teacher, gifted clinician, and valued friend. The Bruce A. Gibbard Lectureship supports visiting scholars in the areas of Dr. Gibbard’s interests (bridging neuroscience with psychoanalysis, teaching students and residents about psychodynamics, ethics, dream work, and therapeutic action). The Gibbard Memorial Lecture Committee includes the following professionals:

Vermont Psychoanalytic Study Group (VPSG)

The Vermont Psychoanalytic Study Group (VPSG)* is a member of the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA) under the auspices of the International New Groups Committee. Their purpose is to provide education and training opportunities for individuals interested in psychoanalysis in Vermont and adjoining areas. In 2011, the Vermont Psychoanalytic Study Group was given approval by the IPA to create an IPA approved training program in psychoanalysis. Currently, the program has graduated 5 candidates.

Vermont Institute for the Psychotherapies (VIP)

The Vermont Institute for the Psychotherapies (VIP) provides a two-year Post-Graduate Certificate Program in the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapies for Licensed Mental Health Professionals. In an atmosphere of open dialogue and diverse theoretical perspectives, VIP's mission is to increase professional and clinical expertise in their participants’ ability to help patients negotiate conflicts and emotional obstacles in self and relationship.

Center for Real Dialogue

The Center for Real Dialogue provides training in the skill of Real Dialogue. The Center for Real Dialogue contains the Institute for Dialogue Therapy, which offers professional training in Dialogue Therapy. Dialogue Therapy is a structured, time-limited couple therapy method that draws from psychoanalysis, mindfulness, and psychodrama. It can be applied to couples in conflict and to other dyadic relationships in conflict.

Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute - North (BPSI North)

BPSI North is a satellite committee of the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute in Newton Centre, Mass. Founded in 2011, we are a consortium of BPSI-trained clinicians practicing in far-flung areas all over New Hampshire and Vermont and headquartered in the Upper Valley region in Hanover, NH. This group includes clinicians trained at BPSI as well as other APSAA approved psychoanalytic institutes.

Connections are maintained to BPSI and the Boston psychoanalytic community through the generous outreach of BPSI faculty who travel to Hanover to give weekend presentations and workshops to the BPSI-North membership. Invited speakers from Boston are treated to an overnight stay at the Norwich Inn. A welcoming dinner the evening before the workshop kicks off the weekend, and any BPSI North member attending the workshop is welcome to join this dinner. Informal Saturday morning workshops are hosted in members’ homes and include a meet-and-greet over coffee and pastries, a three-hour presentation, and time for discussion and networking. BPSI North aims to host four workshops a year, two in the fall and two in the spring, and make CEUs available whenever possible. They welcome clinicians who are psychoanalytically oriented, whether they are very experienced or just starting their career. Members are also invited to submit proposals for clinical workshops to the BPSI North steering committee
